Staff Engineer
Locations: Los Angeles (CA), Birmingham (AL)
Position Summary: Individuals perform a variety of professional duties of a technical and often complex nature, supporting the development and issuance of ICC-ES Reports on code compliance of building materials and methods.
Key Relationships: Staff Engineers report to a Regional Manager, work closely with all ICC-ES staff as well as with clients and building officials as needed to complete evaluation of testing results and produce reports.
General Responsibilities: Following established ICC-ES procedures, and under only general supervision, Staff Engineers work independently as well as within a team environment to deliver professional services such as: studying and evaluating test reports, calculations and other technical data submitted by clients; preparing correspondence and reports regarding compliance of products with code; developing criteria for the acceptance of alternative building methods and materials; providing expert assistance to building departments throughout the United States; participating in ICC-ES Committee meetings and hearings; representing ICC Evaluation Service on matters of interest and concern at meetings with national, state and local government officials, industry groups, international bodies and other interested parties; and performing other related duties as assigned. Individuals are responsible for keeping professionally abreast of developments in the building construction field through participation in conferences, meetings and seminars of professional organizations as well as constant review of relevant literature.
Recommended Qualifications: Minimum general qualifications typically include a Bachelor’s degree in engineering, or science, at least three years of responsible experience in building code development or enforcement, product testing, or equivalent applicable experience; sound working knowledge of building codes and modern construction methods and materials, including their application in all types of building construction; knowledge of current trends and developments in construction methods and materials; and ability to travel both locally and nationally, except as this requirement may be waived. Individuals are expected to possess either a license to practice engineering, or demonstrated equivalent experience of distinct value to ICC-ES.
