New Evaluation Reports Published
ICC-ES staff continues to work on reports for products submitted for evaluation. Following a comprehensive technical review process, ICC-ES issues reports each month on new and innovative products.
Each list includes the report number and the name of the product(s) recognized for code compliance. A complete list of ICC-ES Evaluation Reports is available online.

2007 Evaluation
Committee Schedule

New building products and technologies are constantly being developed. When there are no clear requirements in the code for new products and methods, the ICC-ES Evaluation Committee approves acceptance criteria used to evaluate new products. Upcoming 2007 meetings will be held in Los Angeles and Birmingham as noted below:

June 5–7: The Westin Los Angeles Airport, Los Angeles, CA.
October 10–12: The Hilton Birmingham Perimeter Park, Birmingham, AL.

Additional meeting information and important deadlines are available online.

ESAC Update
Mark Crawford, S.E., ESAC Chairman and VP of Engineering for Simpson Strong-Tie, reports on the progress of the advisory committee.

Last year, recognizing the ever-increasing importance of the services provided to the building industry by ICC-ES, the ICC-ES Board of Directors established the Evaluation Service Advisory Committee (ESAC). The 20-member committee is familiar with the activities and operations of ICC-ES, and represent a broad spectrum of the building industry.
Two primary functions of ICC-ES are to develop Acceptance Criteria (AC) used to evaluate products and to provide product evaluation reports. Most people are aware of the ES Evaluation Service Reports, but have a limited understanding of the effort it takes to develop ACs and subsequently to provide Evaluation Service Reports on products. Due to the importance of each function, ESAC is concurrently reviewing and evaluating both of these primary areas of ES effort.

Technical Staff Meeting
ICC-ES technical staff and management hold training meetings, which include discussing ways to improve the evaluation process. During the most recent meeting, earlier this month, staff discussed specialization with the intent of streamlining the internal review process. A senior staff engineer is assigned with the authority to make decisions for specific subjects of evaluation. The technical staff also reviewed proposed acceptance criteria that will be on the agenda for the Evaluation Committee meeting to be held in June in Los Angeles.

Evaluation Committee Highlights
The ICC-ES Evaluation Committee met February 6–8 in Los Angeles to consider new proposed acceptance criteria for alternate products and for products where additional clarification is needed in the code; and for existing criteria that need to be revised to reflect current code, updated standards or changes to products. Read highlights of some of the actions taken by the Evaluation Committee. Twenty-nine separate items were considered at the three-day meeting, with 21 being approved.
Twenty-one items were approved during the February Evaluation Committee meeting.

Farvardin Appointed to ANSI Committee

Farvardin
Si Farvardin, ICC-ES Senior Evaluation Specialist, has been appointed to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Conformity Assessment Policy Committee, which is responsible for development of ANSI strategic directions and policies related to national, international and regional conformity assessment, and ANSI accreditation programs for certification bodies. As a full member, Farvardin will be filling the position vacated by ICC Senior Advisor Dave Conover, whose membership expired December 2006. The first meeting of the new committee was held in March at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland. With more than 23 years of experience, Farvardin holds building, mechanical, electrical and plumbing certifications, and is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

ACI Presentation Well-Received
Dr. Mahmut Ekenel, ICC-ES Senior Evaluation Specialist, made a presentation to nearly 100 attendees at an American Concrete Institute (ACI) student chapter dinner held at San Jose State University (SJSU).
“Dr. Ekenel, Thank you for your time in giving an outstanding presentation to the ACI local chapter and the students at San Jose State University.” —Dr. Akthem Al-Manaseer, Professor and Chair, SJSU
The presentation, “California’s Path to International Building Codes,” included an explanation of the International Building Code and the International Residential Code, with Dr. Ekenel covering the role of ICC-ES using case studies relative to alternative building materials or methods. Many participated in the Q&A session following the presentation.

Dr. Ekenel is a member of ACI 544 (Fiber Reinforced Concrete) and ACI 440 (Fiber Reinforced Polymer in Reinforced Concrete Structures).

AC322 Nearing Completion
ICC-ES technical staff worked diligently with interested parties during the last two years to develop acceptance criteria for pre-fabricated, cold-formed, steel lateral-force-resisting vertical assemblies (AC322). Although two major issues still need to be resolved, the criteria is nearing completion. The ICC-ES Evaluation Committee held the criteria for further study at the last committee meeting in February to provide ES staff time to work with interested parties to resolve the remaining issues.
