Why
should your company apply for an evaluation report?
Many code officials rely on evaluation reports from ICC-ES as one method
to establish that a building product or system meets code requirements.
Evaluation of your product by ICC-ES, with the issuance of an evaluation
report, provides:
Clear evidence,
respected by regulators and construction professionals across the United
States, that your product complies with code.
An independent
review by our expert staff of the technical, code-related aspects of your
product and your quality system. If there are any problems, you will hear
about them from us rather than from unhappy customers and unsatisfied
code officials.
A leveling of
the playing field, since your product will be evaluated in the same way
as your competitors' products, if they also have evaluation reports.
A process that
is rigorous but fair, extremely thorough andfor that very reasonthoroughly
credible. Assured that your product complies with code, you will find
that the time and money devoted to an evaluation was time and money well
spent.

ICC-ES
Acceptance Criteria
Generally, it is necessary to develop ICC-ES acceptance criteria for products
that are alternates to what is specified in the code and those that are
structural in nature and/or affect life-safety.

Agencies
Under ICC-ES Rules of Procedure, it is generally true that test reports
in support of evaluation report applications must come from laboratories
accredited by the International Accreditation Service, Inc.® (IAS®),
or by another accreditation body that is a signatory to the Mutual Recognition
Arrangement (MRA) of the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation
(ILAC).

Steps
taken to reduce backlog
ICC-ES management is well aware that delayed review of data can cause
consternation among report applicants. ICC-ES is therefore actively taking
steps to reduce its backlog, including hiring additional staff, lessening
the burden on the Evaluation Committee, and creating a working group of
technical staff to process reports with greater efficiency.

New
Web site debuts
ICC-ES
recently unveiled a new Web site featuring improved graphics and readability.
The Web site, located at www.icc-es.org,
provides code officials, contractors, architects, specifiers and other
building-industry professionals with free access to evaluation reports
that indicate the code compliance of specific building products.

ICC-ES
earns ANSI accreditation
The Accreditation Committee of the American National Standards Institute
(ANSI) has approved accreditation of ICC-ES.
ANSI went through a 16-month assessment process before making its final
decision to accredit ICC-ES. During that process, an ANSI assessment team
visited all three ICC-ES offices to review records, interview staff and
determine compliance of ICC-ES with all ANSI requirements. ANSI follow-up
assessments will occur annually.

ICC-ES
adds technical staff
To better serve report
applicants and report users, ICC-ES has recently added three members to
its technical staff and expects to add two more staff members in the near
future.

Evaluation
Committee meeting scheduled for Birmingham
The
next meeting of the ICC-ES Evaluation Committee will be held Oct. 12-14
in Birmingham, Alabama. The meeting should be a very busy one, as approximately
30 items are on the agenda for committee consideration.
The full agenda for the October meeting can be found on the ICC-ES
Web site by clicking on "Committee
Meetings.”
Product
Listings and Evaluation Reports
A
number of recent inquiries from users of evaluation reports have prompted
the need for an explanation of the differences between listings and evaluation
reports. Each serves a distinct purpose and they complement one another.
Neither should be considered a product approval.
Only code officials have the authority to approve the use of a product
in their jurisdictions; listings and evaluation reports are tools that
code officials can use in making their decisions.
