Welcome to ICC-ES eNews

Welcome to ICC-ES eNews, an electronic newsletter that will be issued on a quarterly basis. The purpose of this publication is to inform report holders, building regulators, members of the ICC family and anyone else with an interest in the U.S. construction industry about the activities of ICC Evaluation Service, Inc.® (ICC-ES®).
Each issue of the newsletter will include a list of newly issued evaluation
reports, as well as brief articles on ICC-ES operations. We invite your comments, and look forward in future editions to introducing readers to the ICC-ES staff, their backgrounds and activities; ICC-ES report holders and their innovative products; and the code officials who voluntarily contribute to the ICC-ES program and who use evaluation reports in carrying out their duties of code enforcement. Why should your company apply for an evaluation report?

Many code officials rely on evaluation reports from ICC-ES as one method to establish that a building product or system meets code requirements. Evaluation of your product by ICC-ES, with the issuance of an evaluation report, provides:
• Clear evidence, respected by regulators and construction professionals across the United States, that your product complies with code.
• An independent review by our expert staff of the technical, code-related aspects of your product and your quality system. If there are any problems, you will hear about them from us rather than from unhappy customers and unsatisfied code officials.
• A leveling of the playing field, since your product will be evaluated in the same way as your competitors' products, if they also have evaluation reports.
• A process that is rigorous but fair, extremely thorough and—for that very reason—thoroughly credible. Assured that your product complies with code, you will find that the time and money devoted to an evaluation was time and money well spent.

ICC-ES Acceptance Criteria

Generally, it is necessary to develop ICC-ES acceptance criteria for products that are alternates to what is specified in the code and those that are structural in nature and/or affect life-safety.

Steps taken to reduce backlog

ICC-ES management is well aware that delayed review of data can cause consternation among report applicants. ICC-ES is therefore actively taking steps to reduce its backlog, including hiring additional staff, lessening the burden on the Evaluation Committee, and creating a working group of technical staff to process reports with greater efficiency.

ICC-ES earns ANSI accreditation

The Accreditation Committee of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has approved accreditation of ICC-ES.

ANSI went through a 16-month assessment process before making its final decision to accredit ICC-ES. During that process, an ANSI assessment team visited all three ICC-ES offices to review records, interview staff and determine compliance of ICC-ES with all ANSI requirements. ANSI follow-up assessments will occur annually.

Evaluation Committee meeting scheduled for Birmingham

ICC-ES Committee MeetingThe next meeting of the ICC-ES Evaluation Committee will be held Oct. 12-14 in Birmingham, Alabama. The meeting should be a very busy one, as approximately 30 items are on the agenda for committee consideration.

The full agenda for the October meeting can be found on the ICC-ES Web site by clicking on "Committee Meetings.”

Product Listings and Evaluation Reports

Listings - ReportsA number of recent inquiries from users of evaluation reports have prompted the need for an explanation of the differences between listings and evaluation reports. Each serves a distinct purpose and they complement one another. Neither should be considered a product approval.

Only code officials have the authority to approve the use of a product in their jurisdictions; listings and evaluation reports are tools that code officials can use in making their decisions.
